Year of Creative Habits – Days 86 & 87:
It’s still Easter weekend and two “must happen” occurences in my holiday traditions are #1 – it must rain, at least a little, either the Saturday before or on Easter itself. (I can’t remember an Easter when it hasn’t.) We had a little pop-up shower Saturday morning and today, Easter, we woke up to the most delicious sounding soft rainfall.
#2 in the “must have” category – we must have the simple wooden beam cross, covered in chicken wire, on the platform of the church sanctuary. After the candles at the altar are lit the congregation moves together to flower the cross. Some with store-bought bouquets, others with flowering branches and selections from their homes.
In minutes we have the most beautiful, celebratory cross. Each year we all remark that this year’s creation is more lovely than the last.
I love this quote from Pope John Paul II, “Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.”
